|FRESH FUNK ROCKS ACT|
Sept 24 - There is a new champ in the ACT. Fresh Funk has emerged as an elite force in this year's GROOVE Canberra show. The other surprise, new entrant Dance Central danced away with the second spot.
Friday night's jaw-dropping GROOVE show in Canberra gave us two things to remember - GROOVE has created a trusted and empowering brand, and secondly, Canberra will be a force to be reckoned with in BATTLEGROUNDS after watching this year's crop.
The new venue at the Vikings Club was a strategic move that allowed GROOVE to accommodate for more people. When doors finally opened, it was only a matter of time before the SOLD OUT sign was put up.
It was a moment of madness as everyone rushed inside to get away from the freezing cold, but more so everybody was filled with anticipation of what's coming up. The crowd sweltered by 7pm, and the full capacity meant hundreds of people were turned away.
Two GROOVE divisions, a BBOY battle and a brand new URBANSTAR talent quest division was on show. International guest judge SWOOP, HOOPDREAMZ founder Marco Selorio and local judge Nicole took their place on the judging panel.
Vikings Club is situated down the south of Canberra, heading towards Tuggeranong. The local area is booming with shops and near the outskirts of neighbouring suburbs as Oxley and Erindale. The atmosphere was electric.
The night started with the Urbanstar Talent Quest. Singer after singer came through, but it was eventual winner Tabatha Omaji who opened the night with a booming Alicia Keys remix number.
Dance performances and bboy battles were in full swing after the Urbanstar competition. However, it was dance studio FRESH FUNK that lit up the place. After securing fourth place in 2006, the funky bunch took it to another level this year and entered three groups into the comp, one in the Junior Division and two in the Open Division. The Force team swept everyone, but their Flava team managed to sneak in at fourth place in the Open. The Fresh Funk Juniors came second in the Juniors and are now poised to represent the ACT as well.
Surprisingly, newcomers Dance Central brought their A Game with them. Attitude and Appearance. The ladies got their groove on, and the judges were amazed at the group's tight routine and appeal.
Urban Lava, a showcase group in the past two years, finally braved the competition and entered the Junior Division this time around. Their team is now the Canberra Junior Champs. Jo Fischetti, please stand up!
Thank you to Six One Three, The Coffee Club and Buzz Monkey for your support and patronage.
It was an awesome night to remember in wintery Erindale. Success in many ways, and to all the groups, performers and crew who got involved, keep up the hard work and more power.
